Hellbound

POSSIBLE SPOILERS!

I was initially interested when the teasers of this series came out as it contains themes which I like in dramas. Paranormal? Check! Mythical beings? Check! Blood and gore? Check!

I was prepared to see more of those thunderous and fearful beings that beat the life out of people before condemning them to hell, but the story focused more on their effect on society. The writer/director, Yeon Sang-Ho also directed Train to Busan which had underlying themes on societal problems. This series is no different.

However, I was a bit disappointed as I was expecting more focus on how these beings came about or some reason why they suddenly appeared. Maybe some other paranormal appearances? I don't know but the ending hinted of another season.

Gist of the story was that a person would receive a message or a "decree" from an angel giving them their exact time of death and in the next breath, condemning them to hell. If that damning prophecy was not enough, a trio of monsters would appear on the day of their death, beat the crap out of them and then burn them to hell.

This supernatural occurrence birthed a religion, a cult so to speak, where people were taught to follow the tenets of their belief lest they be condemned to hell. Maybe this what makes the series interesting. It's a study of human behavior and how we react when we are faced with something that is beyond explanation.

Would I recommend? It's not for everyone but it's a definitely fascinating watch.
